Nanny Still 'Tiimalasi' Vase
An olive green model 1443 'Tiimalasi' vase, designed by Nanny Still in 1971 for Riihimäki Glassworks, Finland.
Meaning 'hourglass' in Finnish, 'Tiimalasi' takes its name from its unusual mirrored form; the design is perfectly reversible, presenting essentially the same silhouette whichever way up it is placed.
There is something wonderfully Space Age about this piece's combination of inflated curves and strongly defined horizontal ribbing. The strict symmetry keeps this playful form remarkably composed, giving the vase a sophistication that transcends its distinctly early-1970s character.
This example is particularly attractive in deep olive green. The rich, earthy colour beautifully complements the vase's sculptural form, gathering in darker tones around the deeply ribbed centre.
