Nanny Still 'Sulttaani' Decanter & Six Glasses

Nanny Still's 'Sulttaani' (Sultan) range was designed in 1966 for Riihimäki glassworks and released to the public the following year. The series is vastly different to the majority of Finnish glass produced at the time, as most other designers in Finland were still focussed on the purity of simple forms; a principle that developed during the initial postwar period. 

Still's early work was more in-line with this restrained aesthetic, but by the late 1950's her designs were becoming much bolder and more colourful. After moving to Belgium in 1959, she veered away from minimalism completely. 

The inspiration for this series was a trip to Istanbul in the early 1960's. The tall decanter and glasses have each been handblown after placing the molten glass into an optical mould, creating a decorative ribbed effect. The decanter is topped with a substantial onion dome stopper, and all pieces feature hooped ridges. Perhaps the most playful element is the glass itself, as the set is made from uranium glass which glows vibrantly green in direct sunlight.

The set comprises of a decanter and 6 cocktail glasses. Each piece is stickered.
