A model KF 254 hen bottle designed by Kaj Franck in 1959 for Nuutajärvi NotsjöFinland.

This design is scarcely seen, produced in small numbers between 1959 and 1962. This example, which retains its original sticker, was made in 1961.

The mould-blown cube-shaped glass bottle is handmade from sky blue glass, whereas the glass bird stopper, free-blown & tool-formed, is speckled in a multitude of colours. The freckles of green, pink, yellow, and black that emulate a bird’s plumage have been crafted using the (Venetian) macette technique; the glassblower rolls malleable glass on a surface scattered with small glass pieces of different colours. Once reheated these pieces are embedded in the molten gather to be worked, creating an attractive dappled appearance.

The juxtaposition of multicoloured mottled glass and a solid blue colour highlight the different elements of this decorative bottle. Helping to further contrast the two parts are their forms. The use of a perfect cube in the main body of the bottle imbues the piece with Modernity, whilst the fluid curved lines of the hen stopper infuse it with the ageless beauty found in nature. Adding further visual interest, each face of the glass cube is gently concave.

Designed with precision and crafted with elegance, each model KF 254 is unique but each iteration captures the essence of Kaj Franck’s design ethos. The hen bottle, like all of Franck’s best considered designs, is a harmonious blend of artistic expression & functionality, which is so characteristic of Franck's design philosophy and the collecting rationale of us at Art & Utility.

An example of this design is held in the permanent collection of The British Museum.
