Walter Bosse Rooster Quill Holder / Bud Vase
A patinated brass pencil/quill holder, or bus vase, in the form of a rooster. This brass figure dates from around 1960, and was designed and produced by Walter Bosse in Germany.
Walter Bosse is well-known for his stylised brass animal figures which were predominantly produced by Herta Baller in Vienna, Austria. When Bosse moved to Germany in 1953, he began to design a whole new portfolio of designs to be handmade locally. It was from this period that some of his most famous work was produced, such as his hedgehog ashtrays and animal coat hooks.
This item was produced during this later period, and blends sleek Modernist style with a humorous personality. Formed from an abstract and highly Mid-Century 'Boomerang' shape, this rooster's body is balanced on two tapered legs and a pointed beak. The rooster's face is highly stylised, yet conveys perfectly the bird's playful personality.
The object is black-patinated, whilst the eye and large comb has been polished back to brass. The piece features a hole in which to store a pencil, however this item can also be used as a bud vase; a small plume of flowers becomes the rooster's tail feathers.
