An original family of stacking hedgehog ashtrays designed by Walter Bosse and produced in West Germany during the late 1950's.

Perhaps Bosse's most famous design, the set comprises six individually modelled hedgehogs, each designed as a personal ashtray with spines shaped to accommodate a cigarette. When not in use, the six pieces stack together to form a single large hedgehog.

While much of Bosse's earlier metalwork was produced by Herta Baller in Vienna, the hedgehogs date from the period following his move to West Germany in 1953, when he developed a new body of work for production outside Austria. Their enormous popularity led to numerous unauthorised copies during the 1960s, which prompted Bosse to pursue lengthy legal battles to protect his hedgehog design.

This set is a particularly fine original example of one of Bosse's most beloved designs.
