A large, architectural and highly playful brass doorbell in the form of a friendly curly-horned cow. This characterful bell dates from around 1960, and was designed and produced by Walter Bosse in Germany.

The cow's stylised face is large and distinctive, with pointed ears, curled horns, friendly eyes and polished nose. A large brass bell dangles beneath the cow's chin, and is attached to a long metal chain and spring. The bell itself is capable of a suitably loud ring.

The steel bracket, painted black to match the cow's face, features a wonderful hand-beaten texture and a classic 'fleur-de-lis' form reminiscent of traditional metal finials, iron fences, and hooks for hanging baskets. Resultantly, this Modernist design sits comfortably in a traditional garden setting.  

Walter Bosse is well known for his 'black-golden' line of patinated brass animals, which were first produced by Herta Baller, Vienna, Austria. When Bosse moved to Germany in 1953, animals continued to be his main inspiration whilst he designed a whole new portfolio of work to be produced locally. This period saw the birth of larger, more architectural items including his animal hooks, this doorbell, and the famous stacking hedgehog ashtrays.

Condition: Very good with signs of age and use. Some small chips to the bracket paintwork. The cow's head is in good condition, but has a green-grey patina in places. Some scratches. Completely functional.
