Walter Bosse Chamberstick
A Modernist brass chamberstick designed by Walter Bosse in the early 1950's and beautifully handmade in Vienna, Austria, by the Herta Baller workshop.
Walter Bosse is best known for his endearing 'black-golden' line of patinated brass animals, but he also designed a number of sculptural household items such as trays, dishes and pipe rests in a fluid or organic shape. These items exemplify the sophistication of Viennese Postwar design.
This refined chamberstick, or candle holder, was designed by Bosse in the Organic Modern style. The piece, reminiscent of a flower petal, abstracts the handled 'chamberstick' archetype to its most essential form. Beautifully curved, this piece is both elegant and tactile, whilst the abstract shape functions perfectly - both in a practical and aesthetic sense.
The object is handmade and features a lightly textured hammered surface. This piece has been patinated black, and finished with a polished brass rim.
Organic Modernism was a European design movement that developed during the late 1940's. Taking inspiration from nature, designers abstracted its fluidity & curvatures to create sleek & naturalistic objects for the home. These principles were applied to all areas of design such as glass, wood, and metal, and laid the foundations for the wider Mid-Century Modern aesthetic.
