A unique pair of solid oak bookends in the form of horse heads, made in England circa 1940.

Hand-carved with both sensitivity and skill, these sculptural bookends brilliantly capture the noble elegance of horses in a quiet yet expressive manner. The stylised rendering is restraint but confidently so. The eye, ear, mouth and jowl are each communicated with just a single, carefully judged, carved geometric form.

This subtlety in design allows the character of the material itself to also play a role in the objects expression. Namely, the speckled grain of the warm-toned oak can read like the short hair of the animal, lending the piece an added sense of life and tactility.

Subtle variations across the four carved profiles attest to the bookends’ handmade nature. While clearly the work of a skilled woodworker, they are not commercially produced items. Rather, we believe they are one-off pieces, perhaps made as a personal commission, or as a gift for a relative or friend.

Each bookend is in excellent condition and remains completely usable as well as handsome. Moreover, their charm lies in being able to provide a tangible sense of something entirely and lovingly handmade.
