Tapio Wirkkala Sterling Silver Leaf Dish
A vintage sterling silver biomorphic bowl designed by Tapio Wirkkala for Kultakeskus, Hämeenlinna, Finland.
Originally conceived in 1956, this elegant leaf-shaped bon bon dish exemplifies Wirkkala’s extraordinary ability to distil natural forms into pure Modernist design.
Symmetrically, the sculptural bowl undulates gently outward from a central, stalk-like carrying handle to form what we perceive as two halves of an ivy-like leaf blade. Others discern a heart more than a leaf, but either way the piece reflects Wirkkala’s deep fascination with organic form.
As with many of Wirkkala’s creations, this solid silver bowl achieves the perfect balance between poetry and functionality: at once, it is a small work of art and an object of utility.
