A model TW142 tray designed by Tapio Wirkkala in 1957 and produced by Kultakeskus in Hämeenlinna, Finland, in 1974.

Akin to a glamorous piece by Jacques Ruhlmann, this design combines impeccable craftsmanship and luxurious materials.

The collar of this circular salver is formed from solid silver, hand-tooled with a pattern reminiscent of woven wicker. The silver band is generously deep and subtly tapered, allowing hands to lift the tray with ease and control.

At the centre of the platter sits a disk of Macassar ebony with a wonderfully figured grain and deep, lustrous colour. This rare and exotic timber was selected not only for its beauty, but also for its practical qualities; as a dense hardwood, it perfectly meets the functional demands of a tray for serving drinks.

Measuring 30 cm in diameter, this model TW142 represents the middle size within the series. The design was produced in five sizes (25, 27, 30, 40 and 45 cm in diameter), and examples are documented with a variety of different woods.
