Susan Parkinson Storage Jar
A porcelain storage jar with abstract decoration, designed by Susan Parkinson and made at her pottery in Brabourne Lees, Kent, circa 1958.
The lidded jar has an elegant tapered form, providing a perfect canvas for Parkinson's expressive brushwork. Loosely applied using a wax-resist technique, the lower half displays a geometric arrangement of ovals and vertical lines, while above, spontaneous dots, splashes and marks create a lively abstract pattern.
The lid is painted black, contrasting with the white body of the jar, while its knop is finished with further expressive incised marks.
Parkinson's free approach to decoration provides a graphic and playful contrast to the more classical form of the jar, bringing an unmistakably 1950s character to an otherwise traditional object.
