An extraordinary porcelain sculpture of a sheep, designed by Susan Parkinson and created at the Parkinson Pottery in Brabourne Lees, Kent, circa 1954.

This unusually large model is based on a pregnant Greek ewe. Her exaggerated, swollen proportions give the figure a wonderful sculptural quality, while perfectly capturing the rather ample form of an animal shortly before giving birth.

The 'Sheep', model no. 8, is one of Susan Parkinson's earlier designs and was produced with two different decorative treatments. Earlier examples feature loose, waving brushstrokes suggestive of wool, while later versions were given a more elaborate and time-consuming wax-resist design. This fine example features the latter, with a rhythmic arrangement of geometric squares, ovals and expressive swirls.

The sheep's sculptural head is dominated by long, pointed ears and large painted eyes. The face is animated by freely drawn lines and curls, while spontaneous splashes and spots, a result of the wax method, are scattered across the surface, lending Parkinson's decoration a fantastically lively, almost uncontrolled energy.
