A biomorphic dish with an abstract naturalistic decoration, designed by Susan Parkinson and made at her pottery in Brabourne Lees, Kent, circa 1955.

The form of this shallow bowl is a soft diamond shape with gently upturned edges, reminiscent of an unfurling petal. Its organic Modernist profile is not only practical but evocative of 1950s style.

The painted decoration, like the form itself, beautifully captures the spirit of post-war British design, shaped by the optimism and visual language of the Festival of Britain.

A series of fine hand-painted lines curve across the surface of the dish, interspersed with rhythmic arrangements of dots and curls. Abstract in character, the decoration has a distinctly naturalistic quality, perhaps suggestive of the intricate patterning of a butterfly's wing.
