A porcelain "Toucan" figurine, designed by Susan Parkinson and created at the Parkinson Pottery in Brabourne Lees, Kent, 1952.

The "Toucan" was the very first design produced at Parkinson Pottery and bears the model number '1'. Dating from 1952, when Susan and Richard Parkinson were just beginning to experiment with slip-casting, it was also the first mould designed and made by Susan herself.

The simple, sculptural form of this design established many of the characteristics that would define Parkinson Pottery. This example is decorated in black with characteristically loose yet fine lines and marks, created using wax-resist and sgraffito techniques.

Although widely known as the 'Toucan', the elegant design was officially named 'Small Bird', while Richard Parkinson also referred to the model as an 'Egyptian Coptic'.
