An exquisitely patterned elm burr bowl, hand turned by Richard Raffan in England, 1979.

The bowl dates from an important early period in Raffan's career, when his work was helping to establish woodturning as a serious studio craft in Britain. In 1973 he was the only woodturner selected for the seminal exhibition 'The Craftsman's Art' at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and by the end of the decade his work was being exhibited extensively through galleries and major craft exhibitions.

This beautifully simple bowl, with something of an East Asian character, demonstrates why. Rather than competing with the extraordinary material, Raffan has turned the elm into a restrained form that allows the natural figuring of the burr to become its principal decoration. Swirling grain, knots and constantly changing patterns travel across the surface, making the bowl as compelling to examine closely as it is satisfying as a complete form.
