A vintage 1970s example of a chrome & opaline glass PH 3/2 table light, designed by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen, Denmark.

To our knowledge, no designer has considered the quality of artificial light as rigorously as Poul Henningsen. Developed during the 1920s, his celebrated PH series sought to eliminate the uncomfortable glare of electric lighting. The PH 3/2 table lamp, introduced in 1927, exceptionally satisfies this mission. Three carefully proportioned opaline glass shades conceal the light source and diffuse its illumination, creating a remarkably soft, comfortable pool of light without sacrificing brightness.

However, although beautiful, the shades' distinctive curves are not primarily an aesthetic concern.

Using the logarithmic spiral, Henningsen calculated the form and relationship of each shade to achieve an even distribution of light, diffused reflection, and reduced glare & shadow.

The design evolved from Henningsen's six-shade 'Paris Lamp', created for Denmark's Pavilion at the landmark world fair in Paris in 1925, where it won gold.

Almost a century later, the PH 3/2 remains extraordinarily sophisticated. Compared with newly produced examples, this vintage PH 3/2 from the 1970s also benefits from an aesthetically pleasing cable and in-line switch.

The lamp has been newly rewired with a generous 3 metres of black braided fabric cable. The UK plug and switch, inspired by early Bakelite examples, are also black and equally discreet. Available immediately.
