A pine sauna stool, designed by Olof Ottelin and produced by Finnsauna Lagerholm, Finland, circa 1960.

The construction of this compact, robust & highly functional stool uses only traditional timber joinery, no metal fittings. Moreover, the exposed wooden dowels that interlock the four sections of the seat are also the main decorative element of the design.

Viewed from above, the seat's construction becomes unexpectedly graphic. The matching sections of wood appear like a woven geometric pattern. Of course, the fan display of fairly substantial chunks of wood, separated on all sides by large openings, has a very practical concern; water drainage.

Ottelin's design transforms one of the most utilitarian objects of Finnish domestic life into an unusually expressive piece of furniture - a wonderfully architectural piece that deserves to be admired outside of the sauna also, where you can properly see it!
