A Model 1675 carver chair, designed by Ole Wanscher for Fritz Hansen, Denmark, around 1942.

Designed relatively early in Wanscher's career, the Model 1675 already demonstrates the combination of tradition and Modernity that would come to characterise his work. Wanscher regarded furniture as closely related to architecture, and here the chair is constructed as a remarkably clear composition of individual elements, each given its own distinct form.

The back is particularly elegant. Four pairs of slender spindles rise between the seat and gently curved top rail, while the rear legs sweep backwards beneath them. At either side, broad curved armrests wrap around you before meeting the upright front supports. The result is simultaneously linear and flowing, a relatively traditional furniture type stripped of unnecessary weight and given a distinctly modern lightness.

This example is made from beech, whose warm honey-yellow colour is brilliantly contrasted by the deep red leather upholstery. Where the exposed frame meets the seat, each piece of timber is carefully outlined with piping. This detail, together with the rich combination of colours, emphasises the clarity of Wanscher's structure while lending the chair considerably more warmth and character.
