Oiva Toikka 1451 Grey Vase
A large geometric model 1451 vase, designed by Oiva Toikka in 1963 for Nuutajärvi Glassworks, Finland.
Today, Oiva Toikka is best known for his colourful array of ornamental glass birds. During the early 1960s he also explored a series of striking turn-moulded geometric forms. This vase belongs to a small group of designs produced during that period.
The vase combines a sharply defined profile with a subtle, playful character. Its waisted cylindrical form creates a strong architectural presence, whilst the soft grey hue lends the piece a calm and understated quality.
The design was produced using the turn-mould blown technique, whereby the molten glass gather is rotated within the mould, eliminating seam lines. This process creates a particularly crisp surface and allows the precise geometry of the form to be fully appreciated.
