Liisa Hallamaa Candle Holder
A stoneware candleholder by Liisa Hallamaa, handmade at Arabia, Finland, circa 1960.
Despite its modest scale, this candleholder has a remarkably decorative presence due to its sculptural silhouette. Its narrow waist expands dramatically into an exaggerated flared rim, giving this functional object a distinctive Space Age character.
Hallamaa further emphasises the unconventional form through contrasting glazes. The exterior is covered in chocolate brown, while the interior and broad upper rim erupt in vibrant greens and yellows. Here, the glaze becomes much more expressive, mottling across the surface and gathering into drips and small bubbles. The concentration of colour within the opening further accentuates the candleholder's exaggerated flared form.
This piece perfectly accommodates a standard dinner candle.
