Kaj Franck 'Usva' (Mist) Vase
A rare early-production 'Usva' vase, designed by Kaj Franck in 1951 for Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland.
Translating as “mist” or “haze”, 'Usva' is among Franck's most poetic glass designs. Best remembered for his geometric functionalism, Franck nevertheless possessed a profound sensitivity to the expressive qualities of glass.
This particular 'Usva' example is especially desirable, featuring the rare heart-shaped silhouette and a translucent white bubbled interior. The icy white core appears part suspended and part condensed within the clear glass, creating a visual effect reminiscent of dew drops and morning mist drifting through still air.
Elegant, understated, and deeply atmospheric, this 'Usva' vase demonstrates Franck's exceptional ability to unite Modernist ideals with an appreciation for the natural world.
