An octagonal model 298 vase designed by Kaj Franck in 1964 for Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland.

This geometric vase has been expertly mould-blown using clear glass over a gather of deep purple coloured glass. This advanced technique of creating two layers of contrasting glass without the colours mixing together is called Sommerso (Italian for submerged).

The octagonal shape of the vase embodies Franck's Modernist principles which rely on the beauty of simple geometric forms. The faceted design is also highly considerate to the material, glass, by exploiting its refractive and reflective properties. Light is bounced around the base of the vase, creating a stunning visual effect of shadows and spectrums. The play of light is amplified not only by the impressive clarity of the glass itself, but also a square 'pontil' pressed into the foot.
