A magnificently Modernist model 296 vase designed by Kaj Franck in 1964 for Nuutajärvi Notsjö, Finland.

This weighty vase has been moulded blown using clear glass over a gather of honey-amber-yellow coloured glass. This technique of creating two layers of contrasting glass without the colours mixing together is called Sommerso (Italian for submerged).

The tall rectilinear square sided shape of the vase embodies Franck's Modernist principles whilst being highly considerate to the material, glass, by exploiting its refractive and reflective properties. Light is bounced around the base of the vase, creating a stunning visual effect of shadows and spectrums. The play of light is amplified by the impressive clarity of the glass itself.
