Josef Hoffmann Faceted Vase
A faceted Art Deco vase designed by Josef Hoffmann c.1930 for the Weiner Werkstätte, and produced by the renowned Bohemian glassmakers Ludwig Moser & Söhne after their merge with Meyr's Neffe*.
Collectable Art Deco glass is typically defined by bold decorative form and a strong geometric language, as seen in this vase. Many pieces from the period however embrace richness and ornamentation, and can feel heavily stylised.
This design by Josef Hoffmann remains firmly rooted in the Art Deco language, yet the object's expression is simple and restrained. The emphasis is placed on clarity of form and proportion rather than surface elaboration, resulting in a piece that feels boldly structured and architectural. This pure geometric expression has allowed the vase to retain its style and decorative impact for almost 100 years.
Consisting of a tapered octagonal form, the handmade piece is defined by a series of sharply cut, hand-finished facets arranged in horizontal bands around its surface. These facets not only establish the vase’s architectural form, but also enhance the reflective qualities of the elegantly hued smoke-grey glass.
* Moser purchased Meyr's Neffe in 1922, and changed the company name to Karlsbader Kristallglasfabrik A.G Ludwig Moser & Söhne und Meyr's Neffe.
