An elegant wheel-thrown bowl by Jim Malone, Lessonhall, England, circa 2010.

Handmade on a Korean kick-wheel, and fired in a traditional oriental climbing kiln, Jim Malone's labour-intensive work is heavily inspired by East Asian ceramics. This can be seen with this raw, naturalistic and understated piece. This simple stoneware vessel is highly tactile, combining the texture of unglazed stoneware with its glassy glazed interior.

Created from raw materials gathered from the Cumbrian wilderness, Malone's naturalistic glazes use granites, silts, and wood ashes foraged by the artist himself. This piece features a creamy 'nuka' glaze, made with local wood ash and rice husks; a traditional Korean and Japanese technique.
