Jens Quistgaard Unique Unfinished "Hourglass" Peppermill
A unique unfinished version of Jens Quistgaard’s Model Number 890 combination salt and pepper mill with curvaceous hourglass silhouette.
Made by Dansk, this mill, carved from solid teak, is one of the most ergonomic designs from the series of around 60 pieces. The mill's two main elements are reminiscent of traditional lathed objects such as doorknobs or finials, but the stacking and flaring of these shapes creates a curvaceous form that's unmistakably grounded in Danish Modernism.
The top section, as with most of Quistgaard's mills, holds salt behind a large button-like stopper fitted with cork. Peppercorns are stored in the lower half.
To produce ground pepper, the two sections of the mill must be twisted in the opposite direction. This process is ubiquitous across Quistgaard's mills, as is the act of dashing the mill upside down to expell salt out of the top of his shakers. However, this example of the model 890 is without holes for salt to leave the mill. Salt can only be poured in and out of the mill via the large stoppered hole.
We purchased this item in Denmark and after much thought feel the mill must have been taken off of the production line by a member of staff for their use at home. Consistent with this theory, the mill is not stamped with any Dansk related company information. Only the grinding mechanism is branded. Why they preferred the mill without small holes for salt still remains a mystery. Maybe they preferred salt flakes and a more easily wipeable mill?
