Jens Quistgaard "Tall Ribbed Mushroom"
A vintage 1960’s Model 892 pepper mill made in the most gloriously grained teak, designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs.
Quistgaardpepper.com name this mill the "Tall Ribbed Mushroom”, and we can see why. However, before their brilliant internet archive was created we always viewed this design as a lighthouse.
The mill’s cylindical body is a solid gently tapering tower thats banded by three sets of rings. These three rings create three more sections that are equally sized and spaced. To us these six bands are reminiscent of the red and white stripes seen on lighthouses.
The mill's ellipsoid cap that overhangs the stem is also evocative of a lantern room, with deck and domed roof.
Like most of the mills in Jens Quistgaard's eminently collectable series of around 60 designs, this model holds salt in the top whilst the lower half grinds pepper. Salt is loaded by removing the button stopper atop the head of the mill, whilst pepper is loaded via the sliding door on the underside.
The object functions fantastically but it is also a superbly sculptural piece. Making sure his designs married art & utility was crucial for Quistgaard.
"Practical use and beauty of design must go hand in hand […] The finished product must display harmony but its usefulness must not be affected just for the sake of making it pretty. "
