Jens Quistgaard "Silver Bottom Screwdriver" Mill
A rare "Silver Bottom Screwdriver” pepper mill designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs, circa 1972.
This design is from Quistgaard’s second and final collection of limited edition mills, titled "Rosewood & Silver". The previous special series being his "Rare Woods" line.
As the name helps suggests, this pepper mill, and all those in the "Rosewood & Silver" range, are carved from staved rosewood and accented with silver-plated bands. None of the Rosewood & Silver mills disperse salt, functioning solely as pepper mills.
The top section of the mill has been carved into the shape of a flathead screwdriver bit, a form that feels distinctly Modernist. The design’s lower half is a straight-sided cylinder bound in a silver-plated collar. Dividing these sections are 2 rings carved from the rosewood, and stacked like 2 doughnuts around the objects midriff.
Uniquely, peppercorns are loaded into the mill via an opening sealed by a substantial silver-plated screw. The plugging screw features an exaggerated crosshead and this detail along with the rings creates both a visual rhythm and a tactile point of reference.
Rosewood is prized for its richly figured grain, and in this design Quistgaard fully exploits the timber’s natural beauty. By staving fingers of solid rosewood and sculpting them like he has, we enjoy the lively pattern of 9 pieces of timber, not just 1.
Quistgaard has also taken advantage of the woods hardness by polishing it to a high shine, and then partnering it with silver, an equally lustrous material that too can develop beautiful surface character if left to patinate.
Although this model and all those in the "Rosewood & Silver" collection are smaller than Quistgaard’s classic teak mills, as quistgaardpepper.com succinctly state; ‘[...] the designs in this special edition have kept their revered position in the JHQ oeuvre by continuing to be some of the most expensive peppermills in the resale market.'
