Jens Quistgaard "Flathead" Pepper Mill
A teak pepper mill reminiscent of a musical instrument's mouthpiece, or a flathead screwdriver designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk.
This solid teak "Flathead" mill is perhaps one of the most recognisable designs in Quistgaard's eminently collectable series of pepper mills. Dating from around 1960, this example was made in Denmark, and features an all-metal Tre Spade grinder.
Like all of Quistgaard's mills, the design of this piece is sculptural and attractive yet highly functional. The carved-out top section, for example, becomes a very comfortable 'grip' for grinding the mill, while none of the highly stylised yet carefully considered elements of the design impede on the practicality of the piece.
In Stig Guldberg's 2010 documentary on Quistgaard the latter proclaims: "The finished product must display harmony but its usefulness must not be affected just for the sake of making it pretty. Practical use and beauty of design must go hand in hand."
