Jens Quistgaard "Bullet" Salt & Pepper Mill
A seldom seen model 858 "Bullet” pepper mill designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs, Denmark, circa 1963.
Unlike most of the mills in Quistgaard's collectable series of around 60 designs, the “Bullet” is less about its sillouhetee and more about its surface decoration.
The overall form is simply that of a round nose bullet, stood on end. The straightforward yet streamlined form has its sleekness enhanced by 8 grooves that run top to bottom. Like the riffling inside the barrel of a gun, the fluted pattern carved into the solid teak is not only uniform but precise.
The dramatic fluting makes the design exciting to look at as well satisfying to hold. The tactile design brings further joy when you discover the brilliant shape you can make when using the object. With a tiny twist, a 16 point star or snowflake can be created.
Examples of the "Bullet" are rare owing to its short production period (versus other mills), perhaps due to more complicated and pricer manufacturing processes. Whilst the specific production dates are unknown, we do know that this design was only ever made with a “Transitional” grinding mechanism. That is, the second generation of grinder that used a metal grinder but with overlapping plastic rings around the central mechanism.
The name “Transitional” was coined by quistgaardpepper.com, who recognised that this appears to be a hybrid of the earlier all-metal design and the subsequent all-plastic grinder. Date wise, “Transitional” grinders were used in the mid-1960s.
