Jacob Bang Opaline Pitcher
A large conical carafe in milk-glass designed by Jacob E. Bang for Kastrup Glassworks, and made in Odenese, Denmark.
This pitcher was designed and made in 1957 as part of Jacob Bang's 'Opaline' series, which included many decanters, jars, vases, and glasses etc... all produced in opaque white glass. The form of this carafe is similar to a scientific Erlenmeyer flask, also known as a conical flask. All the vessels in the ‘Opaline' collection were inspired by laboratory glass with Bang being one of the main exponents of functionalism in Denmark, and one of the country's first industrial designers.
Like many Modernist designers, Bang's success can be attributed to him appreciating that commercially produced glass must be as much about utility as it is art. In fact, Bang disliked his utilitarian designs being promoted as 'art glass', insisting he was designing “Not the magnificent cup for Rockefeller, but the beer glass for Denmark's Hansen!”
