Helena Tynell Katedraali
A large Katedraali vase, designed by Helena Tynell for Riihimäen Lasi Oy, Finland, 1963.
The 'Katedraali' (Cathedral) is among Tynell's most extraordinary designs. Within the context of her characteristically light-hearted portfolio, the Katedraali stands apart with its uncompromisingly strong and somewhat serious aura. Tynell was never one to shy away from bold expression, yet it's this exquisitely tall, bright, and elegant form that truly leaps from the page of her catalogue: Katedraali is a merciless exploration of poise, presence, and silhouette - a work that physically rises above her other designs and imparts its own formidable authority.
The design is an early example of a mould-turned silhouette, for which Riihimäki glassworks became well-known. The impactful piece was produced in three sizes and offered for three years in a select range of colours. This example, the second largest of the series, was handblown using a rich, highly pigmented turquoise-blue glass.
