An adjustable Model 319 table light, designed by Esben Klint for Le Klint, Denmark, circa 1960.

With its slender articulated structure in steel and brass, the Model 319 has a distinctly technical character. Yet, as with the best mid-C20th Danish lighting, its functionality is handled with considerable elegance. Each mechanical element forms an integral part of the design rather than interrupting its clean, architectural silhouette.

The lamp is exceptionally versatile. Both the height and reach of the arm can be adjusted, while the angle of the light source can be independently altered, allowing it to function well as a reading or task light. These numerous points of articulation also transform the appearance of the lamp, from a compact upright form to a dramatically extended horizontal composition.

The contrast of materials is particularly effective. Cool stainless steel forms the principal structure, punctuated by warm brass fittings that emphasise the lamp's joints and mechanisms. Rather than concealing how the object works, Esben Klint makes its construction part of its visual character.

The lamp is fitted with a conical shade in deep green velvet. Its rich colour and soft texture provide an unexpected counterpoint to the precision of the metalwork, bringing the warmth and sophistication of a traditional club interior to an otherwise distinctly Modernist design.
