An elegant stoneware vase designed and handmade by Danish ceramicist Arne Bang in Copenhagen, Denmark, circa 1935.

This attractive bulb-shaped vase displays the balanced proportions and speckled surface so strongly associated with Bang's studio works. The piece features a subtle, varied glaze that presents a predominantly grey tone, enriched with dappled sprays of deep blue which beautifully enhance the object's naturalistic expression.

Arne Bang's catalogue of ceramic works reflects a highly naturalistic approach to design, most evident in pieces like this with fluid shapes and pond-like dappled glazes. Distinctive from the more angular tendencies of 1930's Art Deco design, Bang's softer, organically inspired aesthetic greatly shaped Denmark's particular response to the mid-20th century Modernist movement.
